Ha – you got it supernaturilist! Is a very odd building indeed! It is the second widest church in the country. In this case with St Helen’s – the altar is in the middle of the building. A bit like the Catholic Catherdral in Liverpool – you can sit around the altar.
The morphs were on an outside porch entrance – one on each corner. also, the main entrance to the church now is through the north side. Unusual eh? acually they are renovating the church and will move the front door to the east.

Cheers for your reply Simon – alhtough it definatly said St Joanna. Strange eh?

Hello one and all and a merry new year!

Well, I did manage to make one of the churches – very intresting! would have been more intresting if only the damn thing wasnt shut!

But I have a question… on the East porch of the church are four tetramorphs. Each ‘morph is holding a shield and on the shield are inscribed saints names.

The only saint I can see the name of fully (on account of being short) is ‘St Joanna’. This sheild is held by the eagle ‘morph.

So my questions are;

1 – Which gospel is the eagle referring too?

2 – and why do you think he’s holding the name of St Joanna http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintj2l.htm

Thanks

V

edited to add: if I can get someone tall enough to see the other names, I will of course post them.

Ha ha! I know, I was a bit slow even for me! 8O I was re-reading the thread you see – found it very useful as I was picking up things that I hadnt noticed before!

Hmm v intresting re putting hands in water – the water at binsey well is quite away down the shaft. But I might try and have a go if the water table has risen abit!

Cheers!

Hi Stuart

NO, I’m afraid it isn’t. There is a big water connection though.. various rivers run around that area. But also the land is very flat.

Hope that helps

Just posting back to confirm that yes it was the Virgin. Have been to shrine and church again to take pictures – here ye go….

Christ Chruch – St Frideswide’s shrine, foliate heads….

Defaced Head

This head has been either defaced or has been ‘lost’ when the shrine was destroyed during the Reformation.

Head 1

Head 2

Head 3

and the shrine itself

Her Shrine

and finally the well at Binsey

Binsey Well

You can just about see the offerings by the steps that lead down to the well.

I have never seen a Bride’s cross with three arms before. They usually have four – almost swastika like.

Certainly I have been to the mound in Glastonbury at Imbolc and have performed a ritual there. Its difficult to describe the enrgies of the place it is unlike any other place I have been to. Its wild and desolate.

Now that is an amazing picture 8) who’s the artist?

Hullo all

Well – I had better post sommet about myself!

As said before, I work as an Engineer for a manufacturing company based near Oxford. Married with two lovely little dogs!

On the esoteric front – I read BA in about 1990/91, then TSC when it came out. Immediately fascinated by the whole subject of psychic questing. Studied Physics at Liverpool Uni from 95 to 98 before moving down to Oxfordshire to be with my parents who had relocated from Lancashire in 95 (yes, I am originally from oop north!).

Became interested in Paganism towards the end of 98 but it took a few more years (and some wonderful experiences with Herne the Hunter) for me to get fully involved. First in solitary neo-wicca and then training as a Priestess of Avalon in Glastonbury with Kathy Jones.

I founded a learning circle (which was to broadly explore many aspects of Paganism) at Lammas 2003 which I ran with a friend for two years. The group evolved into a Neo-Wiccan Coven Coven of Phoenix Rising but I have just stepped away from leading that group now to explore Goddess based spirituality in greater depth and to concentrate on my writing.

I have been reading the tarot since 1991 which I also teach as well as teaching about Earth-based religions and Goddess Spirituality.

On a questing front, I am very much the greenhorn. Have wanted to do it for years but have not been able to find the time or there was always some other distraction. However, since moving away from the group (I have moved to the outer circle or court) many opportunities have presented themselves – most notably the Godstow/Binsey experiences which culminated in my first sketch a couple of weeks ago. This in turn has led to more research in that area as well as combing my two other present topics, foliate heads and the Goddess Elen. (with a few ley lines thrown in for good measure).

Well that’s me guys!

Yup I did that not last week but the week before. Some very intresting things came out of it. (my two friends went to the site ‘blind’ as it were). Not sure yet of the implications of the material produced but absolutly incredible! Will post when I have digested the matter more fully – probably using the nearby lions testicle. 8O

Next on the agenda is Oxford iteself. Have just come back off hols so am a bit sixes and sevens at the mo. Going tonight to the Goddess Temple for Madron (thats where I trained as a Priestess of Avalon). But have literally just managed to get hold of a copy of ‘Strange Oxford’ so am about to start reading. :P

Edited to add: Yeah will indeed take them to the garden – probably after Oxford. Will let you know the outcome as soon as it happens.

absolutly amazing pics Yuri and indeed a cunning mystery! How wondeful to find something like that… a secret garden!

Makes you wonder about its orgins and the bizarrness of the testicular painting. You know, I keep thinking of the Matrix where he offers the red or the blue pill. 8O

I find that drawing the labrynth is an interesting ritual practice in itself: start with an equal-armed cross, then draw four lines from each arm that spiral around, starting with the upper arm, then the right arm, the left arm and the bottom arm. It feels significant, the cross, the four distinct spiralling lines forming a whole, a maze with a single winding path to the centre. I’m just not sure yet what it means to me, it appears to be both obvious and at the same time just out of reach. I have read that it is a journey, sometimes seen as a journey to the underworld, a journey through life, or a pilgrimage. Also, it sometimes represents the earth.

Hi there supernaturalist

I’ve had some little expereince with this type of labaryinth on a ritual basis. Please feel free to PM me if you want any info.

in reply to: ROBERT HUNTINGTON; 1600′s, witch mania in Oxfordshire #1729

Very interesting Yuri! And illustrates perfectly the need to journal. I actually teach the Craft and I’m very big on it – more from a personal development standpoint really. When people initially get involved with paganism so many changes occur. The awareness of self shifts, portents and synchronicities come to the fore and a dream which occurred and made no sense at the time can have a whole new meaning months or even years later. Sorry ’bout that, slightly off-topic! :D

So Huntingdon existed and had a ‘real’ basis in the Civil War. And then a year or so later you walk into the church and find his name. Amazing! The scene of crucifixion appears anachronous almost.. I have never heard of women being killed in that way. Here’s a thought which strikes me. You are seeing two parts of the same event. However one is symbolic and one is actual.

Thus, the part about the crucifixion and the beating.. perhaps its more symbolic of the Witch frenzy that was being brought at that time? Women and sometimes men literally killed in the name of Christianity (of course we all know that God had nothing to do with it and it was actually more about secular power, law and order as well as social unrest and upheaval).

Then the second part of the dream – do I have this right? That the women were killed in the name or the orders of Huntingdon? It could be either, i.e an act of revenge against him, or he ordered it himself?

Perhaps now is to see if there is a link to any specific witch trial? That information may once have been held by the abbey that was trashed… and may now be held somewhere in Oxford? By the council perhaps?

From an esoteric level, I would hazard a guess that these women want this to be known and that’s why you dreamt it. Have you checked if the date of your dream was significant –such as an anniversary of one of the atrocities?
