I hate to spoil a good conspiracy theory but I think the explanation is more mundane. What is carved on the wall is almost certainly just the Latin variants of the four evangelists name – each linked to their corresponding “animal” or tetramorph.
Thus if Vyxen could see the other names I would guess that they would turn out to be along the lines of: Matthaeus/Man, Marcus/Lion, Lucas/Bull and Joannes/Eagle

although this pairing is very common and you should find many examples of it. We’re just not used to seeing the Latin variants of the names but they must have been used up until very recently (1965?) when the mass was still said in Latin.
