This is a little off-topic (albeit topical as this year is the 30th Anniversary of the first Sar Wars film) but might be of interest to some denizens of this site.
A self-confessed obsessed fan has put together a chronology of everything that is known to have happened in the Star Wars universe – from the films to computer games to books to comics (the chronology currently runs to 1169 pages!). Now this, if you are a fan, is interesting in itself but what’s even more interesting is to see how LucasFilm have seized control of the Star Wars universe and how they now vet everything to make sure that it’s consistent with the established “facts”. There’s a hierarchical “canon” of material where the precedence is laid out and where previously accepted events make way for new interpretations – the rejected sequences eventually becoming part of the apocrypha.
Sound familiar?
Seriously, Appendices A, B and C (contained in a separate document from the main timeline) are highly thought-provoking if you have any interest in how disparate accounts of events gradually get harmonised into an orthodoxy and how the etsablishment decides what gets included and what gets excluded. See it unfolding before your eyes as the new TV series (due out this year) will undoubedly throw more variables into the equation.
